DVD stands for either Digital Video Disc, although it can also be Digital Versatile Disc, but honestly, who says that? It’s a storage medium that blew our minds (at least in the U.S.) in 1997. Before its arrival, we were pretty much stuck with VHS tapes (kids, ask your parents). DVD gave us better quality video and audio, not to mention letting us move automatically to certain points in footage being read from it. Before that, rewind and fast forward meant exactly that. It is currently (as of March 2012), still the most prevalent concrete (as opposed to streaming) way of delivering movies and software, despite the entertainment industry’s efforts to get everyone to move to hi-def Blu-Ray.
