My Advice: Rent it
Bertram "Bertie" Wilberforce Wooster (Laurie) is happy in his life as an incurable bachelor. He does pretty much whatever he wants when he wants and is satisfied doing so. However, somehow he keeps getting himself into impossible situations that put his bachelorhood into jeopardy. Lucky for him, his valet, Reginald Jeeves (Fry), is quite apt at proposing the means by which to get his master out of these impossible situations.
These stories are amazingly funny and it also doesn't hurt that they have two of Britain's finest actors playing the lead roles. Laurie is absolutely perfect as Bertie Wooster. He has a natural awkwardness about him that fits the role like a glove. Fry has just enough stiffness to pull off playing the ever faithful manservant. The dialogue is painfully witty and it just doesn't stop. The only problem that I can see with the production is that since it is set in New York, some of the actors have absolutely horrible American accents, but that's okay, because I can't tell you how many times I've heard an American actor deliver a horrible British accent--I guess on a national scale, we're even. The pacing is excellent and Laurie and Fry have a wonderful rapport that never seems to end.
The DVD, like so many of the DVDs that hail from BBC way, is sparse. There is really only one thing that could be considered a "special feature" and it is the biography/filmography of P.G. Wodehouse. To be completely honest, this is what makes this DVD a renter for me and not an owner. It's simply text on screen. Granted, there is a pretty good bit of information here, but it's just not enough to do the source material justice.
So, by all means, check this DVD out the next time you are in looking for something to pick up for a weekend rental. You won't be sorry. Just think twice about owning it.
