Episode 1
“Among the Garbage & the Flowers”
Okay, so…there were three episodes of the Sonic Emporium just before jumping over to Louder Than War Radio. They can still be found on my Mixcloud profile, though I have renamed them “Vol. 1.” I don’t know why I bothered, Marvel restarts a series to get a new #1 issue about four times a year.
Mixcloud will have all LTW episode going forward reposted to it as well. Including any weird things I may decide to throw up there. ONE. NEVER. KNOWS.
NOTE: I’ve just now figured out that for some damn reason, a full playlist is not available on Mixcloud. I put one up there I swear, they’re just being stingy about it.
The reason the playlist is in the format you find it is because I’m a damaged soul. The very overwrought explanation can be found here.
Format is:
Artist/Band Name – “Song Name” – Album Name – (Band’s/Artist’s Country of Origin, Year of Song’s Original Release)
Prologue:
Quentin Crisp – “Stop the Music for a Minute” – Pillows & Prayers (Vols. 1 & 2) – (UK, 1982)
Pistol Valve – “Sit at Cow Char Nall” – Tsunamic Girls From Tokyo – (Japan, 2007)
And here’s some video evidence as to their badassery. I know the video says the song is from 2006, but I haven’t been able to find that anywhere else.
Diablo Swing Orchestra – “Superhero Jagganath” – Pacifisticuffs – (Sweden, 2017)
Once you’ve heard the song, this is fun:
Fishbone – “Hide Behind My Glasses” – Bonin in the Boneyard — (USA, 1990)
Black Brothers – “Saman Doye” – Those Shocking Shaking Days: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk 1970-1978 – (Indonesia, 1978)
Teri Gender Bender – “The Get Up” – Saturn Sex – (USA, 2022)
As I said on the show, “Get Up” is my favorite single from 2022 thus far. Henry Rollins turned me on to her.
Trio Da Kali & The Kronos Quartet – “Eh Ya Ye” – Ladilikan – (Mali/USA, 2017)
Joe Bataan – “Ordinary Guy (jazzanova rework extended version)” – (USA, 2012)
Gilbert O’Sullivan – “Nothing Rhymed” – (Ireland, 1970)
Jorge Ben Jor – “Ponta de lança africano (umbabarauma)” — África Brasil — (Brazil, 1976)
I had no idea the song from Jorge Ben Jor was about sportsball until I looked it up to find the release year.
Mr. Jukes feat. BJ the Chicago Kid — “Angels/Your Love” — God First — (UK/USA, 2017)
Nina Simone — “Suzanne” — To Love Somebody — (USA, 1969)
RJD2 — “Good Times Roll Pt. 2” — Deadringer — (USA, 2002)
Hielo Ardiente — “Mensaje” — Ritmo Ardiente — (El Salvador, 1974)
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Merle Haggard — “Basin Street Blues” — Preservation: An Album To Benefit Preservation Hall And The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program — (USA, 2010)
The Limiñanas — “Migas 2000” — (France, 2010)
Sons of Kemet — “My Queen is Mamie Phipps Clark” — Your Queen is a Reptile — (UK, 2018)
Warren Zevon — “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” — Excitable Boy — (USA, 1978)
Movits! — “Hett Kol” — V:I — (Sweden, 2018)
Kula Shaker — “Whatever It Is (I’m against it)” — 1st Congregational Church Of Eternal Love & Free Hugs — (UK, 2022)
Here’s the Groucho original:
Natacha Atlas — “I Put a Spell On You” — Ayeshteni — (Belgium, 2001)
Katie Lee — “It Must Be Something Psychological” — Songs of Couch and Consultation — (USA, 1957)
45ACIDBABIES — “Jetlag Jenny” — (The Netherlands, 2017)
I think in the show I said this was from their self-titled album. I remember seeing a tracklist for this album…an album which it turns out does not actually exist. So I can only assume I have sidestepped into yet another alternate universe. What a pain in the ass.
William Bell & Judy Clay — “Private Number” — (USA, 1968)
Again, where I got the info in the show, I have no idea. Pretty sure I said it was released in the 80s on an album that doesn’t exist. I swear I haven’t touched cough syrup in years.
The Supremes — “Moonlight and Kisses (german version)” — Motown Around the World: The Classic Singles — (USA, 1965)
Los Johnny Jets — “Bájate de Mi Nube” — Rare Mexican Cuts of the Sixties — (Mexico, 1966)
Blood Red Shoes — “Mexican Dress” — Get Tragic — (UK, 2019)
Saul Williams — “Sunday Bloody Sunday” — The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! — (USA, 2007)
Alice Cooper — “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” — Alice Cooper Goes to Hell — (USA, 1976)
