Headsup: Fighting the Good Fight

Disclaimer : Warner Brothers Home Entertainment asks that we note it provided a free copy of “His Dark Materials: The Complete First Season” and “The Flash: The Complete Sixth Season”.  The opinions I share are my own.

NCIS New Orleans Sixth Season“For Special Agent Dwayne Cassius Pride (Scott Bakula) and his team at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, kidnappers, cults, traffickers and murderers are business as usual. But with the tragic loss of one of their own, these agents suddenly find themselves driven by more than duty: now it’s personal. Will Pride stay loyal to the law, or will vengeance push him over the edge? Experience every stunning surprise, dramatic reveal, and breathtaking cliffhanger in the most suspenseful season of NCIS: New Orleans yet.” — from CBS

NCIS: New Orleans – The Sixth Season is now out on DVD and includes all twenty episodes of Season Six. Bonus features are a little light on this one, being limited to two featurettes covering behind-the-scenes activity and the demise of the show’s exiting character (NOTE: if you don’t know who it is and you’re considering buying the set to catch up on viewing the season, it’s best not to look at the back of the DVD because the title of the featurette flat out says the character’s name in all caps.) If you’re a member of CBS All Access you can access the season for free, and if not you can get the DVD on Amazon for $36.48.

NCIS Los Angeles - Eleventh Season“Spies. Terrorists. Arms dealers. For Special Agents ‘G’ Callen (Chris O’Donnell), Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), and the rest of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, it’s just another day in paradise. But there’s no time to lounge when the biggest cases of their careers come calling, whether it’s local crises like the murder of a Naval lieutenant or the theft of a drone prototype, or international affairs like an impending missile attack in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the high stakes in the field follow the agents home, as Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and LAPD liaison Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) consider whether they could have kids, and tech geniuses Eric (Barret Foa) and Neil (Renée Felice Smith) struggle to maintain their relationship as Eric goes undercover. Likewise, a black ops agent from Hetty’s (Linda Hunt) past returns to seek revenge.” — from CBS

NCIS: Los Angeles – The Eleventh Season is available now on DVD. The set includes all twenty-two episodes of Season Eleven along with a handful of extras: two making-of featurettes (a general one with showrunners Frank Military and Scott Gennill and another centering on the show’s 250th episode co-written by Eric Christian), a short special on rapper Offset (who guest stars in the sixteenth episode of the season) and deleted and extended scenes. Fans can snag the DVD set on Amazon for $29.38.

His Dark Materials Season One Blu-rayHis Dark Materials takes place in a world parallel to our own, where a human’s soul exists outside one’s body in the form of a talking animal called a ‘daemon.’ The all-powerful Magisterium rule over this world where they suppress any knowledge that attempts to challenge its ideas, particularly around the theory that multiple worlds exist. Season One of this compelling HBO series follows Lyra (Dafne Keen), a young orphan who was left as a baby at Oxford’s Jordan College by her uncle Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and desires a life of adventure beyond the confines of her bookish, scholarly surroundings. But when Lyra’s best friend goes missing, her search for her kidnapped friend uncovers a plot involving stolen children and transforms into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon known as Dust. Over the course of the season, as she journeys through the different worlds – including our own – Lyra encounters extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living and the dead at stake.” — from Warner Brothers

His Dark Materials: The Complete First Season is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.  Bonus features on this one are a selection of shorter featurettes covering the creative process with the actors and production team as well as a 30+ minute “making of” feature, but it is important to note that the longer feature actually includes a good portion of the smaller interviews, so it’s not as diverse a spread of bonus content as it would appear at first glance.  Even without a massive amount of extras, though, many fans will be happy to have a hard copy on the shelf.  If you’re among them, you can grab the blu-ray for $19.96 and the DVD for $17.99

Blue Bloods Season 10“Season 10 of Blue Bloods picks up with newlyweds Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie (Vanessa Ray) attempting to balance the rocky terrain of their work and personal lives. In her role as Trial Bureau Chief, Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) confronts the realities of a job that tends to be more political than she would like, and often puts her at odds with her father or brothers. Detectives Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) uncover and solve even more distressing crimes, and Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) continues to confront trouble from 1 Police Plaza. No matter what may arise, however, the Reagans and their family values never fail to make it home for Sunday dinner.” — from CBS

Blue Bloods: The Tenth Season is out on DVD, featuring all nineteen episodes of Season Ten (scaled down from the originally slated twenty-two episodes because of COVID concerns toward the end of production).  Along with these are a small but fun collection of bonus features including the 200th episode celebration, deleted scenes, and a virtual “family dinner” with the main cast. Those who have CBS All Access can watch for free with their subscription, and all others (or those who just want to make sure they have a physical version) can get the DVD set on Amazon, currently priced at $29.99.

Seal Team Season Three“Bravo is back and the whole team is reunited! Season Three of Seal Team begins with Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz) leading the team on a mission in Serbia, but they question Clay’s (Max Thieriot) readiness after his injuries last year. Also, Davis (Toni Trucks) will struggle with the pressure of her new job as the team’s Intel Officer.” — from CBS

Seal Team: Season Three is being released August 25th on DVD, which presents not quite all of the originally planned episodes of the third season since, again, the last two were put on pause in response COVID-19 (word is that those episodes will shift to Season Four). Extras on the set include featurettes on what it was like moving the series to Serbia, the cast having fun driving 200 miles an hour at a NASCAR track, Max Thieriot directing one of the episodes, and the strain deployment puts on the characters and their relationships. If you want to get ahead of the game, you can pre-order your copy on Amazon for $39.96.

The Flash Season Six“No matter how fast he is, Barry Allen, aka The Flash, can’t outrun his fate. Or can he? With an impending crisis threatening Central City, Barry and his wife, Iris West-Allen, cope with the heartbreaking loss of their speedster daughter, Nora, while Barry attempts to prepare Team Flash for a future without him. As Barry navigates the devastating crisis, Killer Frost, Cisco Ramon, Ralph Dibny, Nash Wells, Joe West and Joe’s girlfriend, Cecile Horton, struggle to protect their city and The Flash’s legacy. Will they save their world from a cosmic disaster of infinite proportions? Only time will tell in these 19 episodes filled with death-defying battles, painful reunions and secrets with the potential to throttle the Scarlet Speedster and Team Flash from within.” — from Warner Brothers

The Flash: The Complete Sixth Season will be out on August 25th on DVD and Blu-ray. Like Seal Team and Blue Bloods, production on this season of The Flash was cut short due to pandemic safety concerns, with only 19 out of the originally planned 22 episodes reaching completion. Bonus features that appear on both formats include the never-before-seen “Kiss Kiss Breach Breach – Noir” episode with commentary by showrunner/ executive producer Eric Wallace, a selection of DC TV’s San Diego Comic-Con panels from 2019, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. The Blu-ray version will also include a limited-edition bonus disc featuring all five episodes of the DC Crossover Event “Crisis on Infinite Earths” from Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Fans can pre-order both formats now on Amazon.
