32 Days of Halloween XII, Day 6: The Ape!

The Ape (1940)

For tonight and our #TrackoftheDay, we start with some classic Pink Floyd. There are two songs that spring to mind for a Halloween type endeavor: “One of These Days” and “Careful With That Axe, Eugene.” We’ve gone with the latter. This is from the Live From Pompeii film in all of its David Attenborough documentary-on-acid glory.

And now, I couldn’t help but seek this out after seeing pictures taken by your friend and mine, Misty Lee. It’s from Disney California Adventure Park, where they’ve taken part of their Halloween Party and handed the park over to the villains. We have a walkthrough of the Villains Grove here from just a few days ago…and honestly, seeing how they redecorated with lights and music and such, maybe they’re not so bad after all. If they did landscaping too, I’d make them a deal to take care of my backyard.

Whelp, here we are at our feature presentation, and we go back to Boris Karloff and 1940 here…for The Ape. So, pop quiz, hot shot: you’re a scientist working on a cure for polio (this is still twelve years before Jonas Salk, remember…and kids, ask your parents) and a rampaging ape has just smashed all your samples you were trying to use to save a young woman from the disease. What do you do? Did you answer use the ape’s skin to masquerade as the ape and kill people for their spinal fluid? You did? Full marks. Very nice.
