32 Days of Halloween VII, Day 15: Caltiki, The Immortal Monster!

Caltiki, the Immortal Monster!

In a short while, we’ll be going to schlocksville to do battle with a blob. To sort of offset this, let’s aim for some culture. Previously, I did a recording of Macbeth for 32 Days, and looking back over the archives I was reminded of this: the Patrick Stewart as Macbeth production which aired on PBS. This is freaking fantastic, Halloween aside, but watch until about three minutes in and see some of the best transition work I’ve witnessed in a while. The PBS player won’t let you skip ahead. But trust me, it’s worth it.

It’s available on DVD but hey, if you’re an Amazon Prime member, it’s free streaming. You know, in case you want to see it on a bigger screen. (And you can sign up for a free 30-day trial of Prime here. I’m a member–I recommend it.)

Now that we’re all cultured and such, let’s go to the old-time radio classic series Mystery in the Air. From 1947, here’s Peter Lorre starring in a version of Edgar Allan Poe‘s The Black Cat. And if you’re listening for the first time, let me save you that, “Whoa, where do I know that voice from?” agony…the announcer is Harry Morgan. (I don’t think there are any in-print editions of Mystery…that’s a damn shame.)

Now we go to 1959 for some Italian sci-fi horror madness. If there’s a moral to the story of Caltiki, the Immortal Monster, it’s that you shouldn’t mess with unicellular blob creatures. Especially not ones hanging out in Mayan ruins.

There doesn’t appear to be a serious release of this on DVD. So enjoy it here.
