Music Tuesday: Clutch, Queens of the Stone Age, Dirty Projectors & More…

Clutch

More music picks for your Tuesday. If you like what you hear, use the links provided to snag it for yourself from Amazon. Doing so through us gives us kickbacks, and those help pay for stuff like more bandwidth. And also so we can buy more music.

First up, we go with Clutch, who we hold near and dear to our hearts. We feel that way not just because they allowed us to use their song “Promoter (Of Earthbound Causes)” as the theme for Weekend Justice, and not even just because Neil Fallon’s beard is Mighty–but because they can pretty much rock your face off your skull. Be warned–Neil is somewhat frightening in this live performance of the title track from their new album, Earth Rocker. (Amazon: CD; MP3; Vinyl.)

Hopefully Josh Homme is using this to warm up for the second Them Crooked Vultures album that I so desperately need. But regardless, Queens of the Stone Age debuted their new song “My God is the Sun” from the album …Like Clockwork. It’s due out later this year–no pre-order just yet. And the song is pretty damn choice.

Rob mentioned Dirty Projectors earlier at some point and it went on the “listen to this when you get a second” list. I should have done it earlier…because last year’s Swing Lo Magellan is sort of ridiculously tasty. The backing vocals are fantastic, head burrito Dave Longstreth’s own vocals are just a wee bit off (in the right way)…and hey, “About to Die” breaks out some strings. So what’s there not to like? This is “Gun Has No Trigger” live. (Amazon: CD/MP3; MP3; Vinyl; Vinyl (Deluxe).)

Here we have the folk/country-ish song “L-DOPA” by Laura Stevenson. It, too, has strings. So between that and Stevenson’s vocals, I’m set. And I’m eagerly awaiting the full album, Wheel, due out April 23rd from Don Giovanni Records. Pre-orders available now. (Amazon: CD; Vinyl.)

We also have the official final track from The Flaming Lips‘ album The Terror. It’s “Always There… In Our Hearts” and the full album is due out April 16th. And it’s the perfect song to close out the sort of mad, mashed-flat apocalypse that the album portrays. Why, yes, I enjoy it. Why do you ask? (Amazon: CD; Vinyl.)

I honestly don’t know how I missed the fact that Bill Bailey had put out a metal comedy album, In Metal. Yes, you have stuff like “Love Song” and “Das Hokey Kokey” but also metal versions of “Cars” and a reworked “I Bleed On Your Panini.” And…well, this. It’s so wrong. (Amazon: MP3.)

And now, as has been established above: choirs and such crank my tractor. Especially the explosive vocals they bring–Adam Arcuragi & The Lupine Chorale Society–in “She Comes to Me” from I Am Become Joy, from 2009. I tried to find a good live version of this to no avail–the only thing better than a choir rocking out in the studio is having the choir do it live. (Amazon: CD/MP3; MP3; Vinyl.)

And last but not least, Walla is Chris Walla, guitarist and producer for Death Cab For Cutie. He’s splitting a 7″ single for Record Store Day with Sombear. Sombear’s track is “Incredibly Still” but here we have “Never Give Up” from Walla. An awesome instrumental track that I need to write a movie around.
