Music Monday: The Staves, Wolf Alice, Local Natives & More…

Staves: Mexico EP

More music picks for your Monday, with an assist from Rob. If you like what you hear, use the links provided to snag it for yourself from Amazon. Doing so through us gives us kickbacks, and those help pay for stuff like more bandwidth. And also so we can buy more music.

Just note: any prices we quote are accurate as of when this post goes up.

First up, a band I heard of via one of the few music blogs I still have time to peruse, Aurgasm–it’s The Staves, a trio of sisters from England who sound absolutely amazing. And trust me–I’ve been looking through a lot of music for this post–so nice to hear people who can pull their stuff off live. Granted, they’re not trying to speed around on Segways or fly through the air on a harness…but it’s just nice. Speaking of live, here’s “Icarus” from their Mexico EP.

Next up, a pair of tracks: first, Wolf Alice another trio from England…difference is, their song doesn’t stay the same and sort of explodes halfway in. But that’s okay, we like the musical explodo. It’s “Leaving You.” Couldn’t find anything beyond this single. Following that is the new single from Local Natives out of Los Angeles. It’s “Breakers,” and it comes out tomorrow as an MP3 single.

Next up, another pair: A Fine Frenzy, aka Alison Sudol, originally from Seattle. This is off her latest album, Pines, which came out this month. It’s “They Can’t If You Don’t Let Them.” Followed by a track from West End Motel. This is a side project from Brent Hinds of Mastadon…and while I’m not a fan of Mastadon’s music, I can dig the absolute hell out of this. It’s the new single “Burn It Down” from the album Only Time Will Tell, which streets at the end of the month.

And lastly, Rob pointed us at this via the compilation PDX Pop Now!, which comes out every year. Rob says, “Two discs of great music from Portland, Oregon featuring M. Ward, Wild Ones, Jeffrey Jerusalem, Tu Fawning, Pancake Breakfast and much more. The release is designed to showcase the immense talent coming out of Portland while helping foster awesomeness in sound & bringing together that community culturally.” And one of my favorite tracks on the album, which gives me great joy? “Wish I Could Love” by Hollywood Tans. Just so good. The compilation can be bought from their official site here. And you can download the Tans’ album, Stolen Stereo, for free here.
