32 Days of Halloween V, Movie Night No. 31: 13 Ghosts (1960)

13 Ghosts (1960)

Not the remake. Definitely not the remake. No, we’re going to the 1960 William Castle original, which is the only film ever shot in “Illusion-O.” You were given a ghost viewer that could let you either see the ghosts better than normal…or you could look through the other part of the viewer and be “spared” the utter terror.

We’re going to show you first the trailer that explains the Illusion-O gimmick. And is a bonus because it’s narrated awesomely by Paul Frees. Also, yes, you’re not hallucinating: that is the ever-fantastic Margaret Hamilton as the housekeeper.

I know…it’s not completely clear unless you’re looking at one of the damn things. So here you go:

Illusion-O Ghost Viewer - 13 Ghosts

Gotta love that William Castle. Master showman. Okay, here’s your feature presentation. Don’t be concerned that you don’t have an Illusion-O viewer. The ghosts still appear…they just appear enhanced through the viewer. So there you have it–Enjoy!

The movie’s available on DVD…no Illusion-O there either, apparently.

Previously on this night we’ve enjoyed The Island of Lost Souls, and the 1956, 1939 and 1923 versions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
