The documentary The Town That Was is about Centralia, Pennsylvania. It’s pretty much a ghost town because of a controlled fire that became less controlled and finally kicked off the ignition of a seam of underground anthracite coal. That coal started burning and didn’t stop. The people had to be moved due to all of the gases erupting from the fire. The place has been almost deserted ever since.
This happened in 1962. The fire’s still going. And this is the town’s story. Check out this trailer. Looks fascinating:
