At Home With Ogdred Weary

Here’s something that gets right to the heart of one of our favorite subjects: morbid whimsy. In fact, Edward Gorey could rightly be considered a grandmaster of morbid whimsy. Somebody took a tour of the Edward Gorey House and filmed what they found within. Check it out:

Now if you want to see still photos, apparently Kevin McDermott published a book of pics, Elephant House. It is a photo tour of Edward Gorey’s house taken the weekend following his death in 2000, so it’s exactly as he left it. Fantastic. You can snag a copy from Amazon here.

The Doubtful Guest from Edward Gorey

Going to the House website, I found that there’s a theatre group in the UK who have a show inspired by “The Doubtful Guest.” I just love the notion of a live action Gorey character wandered about, like in the pic there. Here’s a trailer for the production:

The group is called Hoipolloi and you can find their site here for more info about the show, which might hit the stage again this year.

This got me wondering, though: an animated film. Had one ever been done, besides the opening to PBS’ Mystery? Here’s one:

And a feature film? Well, the same story The Doubtful Guest was announced as a feature over at the Henson Company. Of course, that was in 2007 and I couldn’t find any mention of it since–Brad Peyton (who brought us “Evelyn: The Cutest Evil Dead Girl”) was attached to direct. Since I couldn’t find anything, I called Henson and they said it was still on and in active development. So there’s that, although the original date of 2009 is now 2010 on the IMDB. So.

What’s your favorite Gorey work?
