Brad Pitt from Troy

  • Somebody go check on Dindrane. George Miller and Brad Pitt are going to do The Odyssey for Warner Brothers. As a sci-fi story in outer space. At least that’s the word, the article doesn’t seem to say either is officially attached at the moment. The article also says that Miller still attached to Justice League, which I still, sorry, don’t think will ever happen. Pitt is also on tap for a movie based on the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, about the manager of the Oakland A’s, who built his baseball team using computer analysis to help decide what players to draft. Steve Zaillian (All the King’s Men) is scribing and David Frankel (Devil Wears Prada) is to helm. Source: Variety.
  • Making the upcoming All About Eve reading even more of something they damn well better film, Brian Bedford (who’s done a lot, but you probably know him best as the voice of Disney‘s animated Robin Hood) Peter Gallagher, Angela Lansbury, Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City) and John Slattery (Mad Men) have all joined the cast. And I had forgotten I actually reviewed the DVD here. Source: Variety.

  • Bourne 4? You betcha. The third film made coin, so what did you expect? George Nolfi (co-writer of the third film) is on board to scribe. They say it’s going to be an original story and not a Ludlum novel. That makes sense, since there was no fourth Ludlum Bourne book, but rather one written by Eric Van Lustbader, The Bourne Legacy. But “original story” says to be they’re ignoring the fourth book. Director Paul Greengrass and Damon are both already on board. Source: Variety.
  • Frank Darabont has exited the previously discussed Law Abiding Citizen and F. Gary Gray (Be Cool) is in talks to step in. Source: Variety.
  • Merchant of Shanghai is a filmy about Silas Hardoon, who dealt in real estate and opium in the 19th Century and put the city on the modern map. Taylor Hackford (Ray) will helm the film starting in the fall of next year. Timothy J. Sexton (Children of Men) is doing a rewrite but the article doesn’t say on what.
  • The movie Once is going to be a musical, aiming for Broadway during the 2010-11 season. No creative team is announced yet. The producers expect Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the film to be involved with development and hope John Carney (writer/director of the original film) will as well. Songs will include those in the film and those that were written and never made it into the film. The same producers want to do a stage revival of The Front Page which became His Girl Friday. Source: Variety.
  • The Soloist, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, has been moved from November 21st to March 13th. Basically it was going to cost money and there’s a lot of films already contending for the awards, so Paramount blinked. The article says they “risks tainting the movie’s profile with this move, which the industry and media will read as a vote of no-confidence.” Well, that’s exactly what it is. If they thought it was going to burn up the box office and awards sure thing, then they wouldn’t move it. So.
  • If you wanted to see Spamalot–better hurry. It’s announced it’s closing on Broadway on January 18th. Source: Variety.
  • Fans of Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles got a reprieve. The network’s ordered a full season. Source: Variety.
  • The new version of Waiting For Godot will star Bill Irwin (Mr. Noodle from Sesame Street) and Nathan Lane. That starts on April 30th. And as I remembered, Irwin was in Godot previously when Steve Martin and Robin Williams did it–Jesus, twenty years ago–at the Lincoln Center. The Lincoln Center films all their shows, as I understand it. Um. Anybody got a copy of that one? Source: Variety.

    • Did you know that Fiona Shaw (Aunt Petunia from Harry Potter) wanted to do a female cast version of Waiting for Godot but was denied by the Beckett estate? A shame as she is a really good stage actress if anything.
