Stuff: Jack Bauer Gets Prequelized

24: Exile is the TV-movie event thing that precedes the seventh season of 24. It’s broadcast November 23rd, is available on DVD November 25th with ten more minutes of footage, Season 7 sneak peak, featurettes, commentary and more stuff. The flick “catches up with Bauer four years later on the African continent where he has sought solace in missionary work. As the action unfolds on the day of the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, he finds himself in the midst of a bloody uprising in the small fictitious African nation of Sangala where a ruthless dictator is drafting innocent children as soldiers in his army. As the vicious warlord descends on an orphanage in search of recruits, Jack enters into a one-man crusade at the behest of a friend to rescue the children and get them to safety.” You can pre-order it here.

Comedy Born to Rock is being produced by David Duchovny, Tea Leoni and Dan Cortese. In it, a group of older rock musicians “end up catching a record exec’s attention for a children’s song written on a lark, then find unlikely success as a Wiggles-type children’s band.” It certainly sounds like it has potential. Date Night will star Steve Carell and Tina Fey as a married couple. It’s helmed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and written by Josh Klausner (scribed on Shrek the Third). Starts production next year whenever Carell and Fey can find time in their TV schedules. Source: Variety.

Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson are on board, and Javier Bardem is in talks to get on board, of a film based on the book by Bill Carter, Fools Rush In. This was not, in fact, the basis for the Matthew Perry film, but instead a book about Sarajevo during the siege. Production should begin later this year. Source: Variety.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been moved back to July 17th of next year. Source: Deadline Hollywood Daily And Twilight, the movie, is being moved from December 12th to November 21st, filling the gap that Potter left.

Kick-Ass, the comic by Mark Millar, is going to be helmed by Matthew Vaughn (Stardust). He’s doing it independently because studios are freaked out at the prospect of an ultraviolent film starring kids. Go figure. Source: Hollywood Reporter.

Christopher Lloyd has joined the cast of Mirabilis, a miniseries for Sci-Fi. There are four knights involved in the story and Lloyd will play one of them: “Tesselink, a venerated senior elf that is an accomplished master of bloodsteel sorcery.” That is a glorious character note, isn’t it? Mike Myers is going to play British General Ed Fenech in Inglorious Bastards. This will be his first serious role since 54 ten years ago. And probably the first role I look forward to seeing him in since Austin Powers. Source: Variety.

Bill Nye the Science Guy–I almost typed “Ben Nye,” but he’s The Makeup Guy–returns to television on the Planet Green network to host Stuff Happens. “Nye looks at all the stuff in our lives — from the food we eat to the clothes we wear — to unlock the secrets of everyday things before and after we use them, and reveals the unintended consequences of all the stuff we take for granted.” Premieres September 2nd at 9PM EST. I had no idea there was a Planet Green channel. But the again, I don’t watch television. You can find it by checking out their official site.

The previously mentioned Smothers Brothers Best of Season 3 release is now available for pre-order.

Universal‘s Legacy Series is getting three new additions: Vertigo, Rear Window and Psycho. They’re two-disc editions and they all have a new commentary track, featurettes, an episode from Hitchcock‘s television show, and bits from an interview between Hitch and Truffaut. They come out October 7th. You can pre-order them thusly here: Psycho; Rear Window; Vertigo. They’re $20 each as I type this.

Universal is also releasing updated special editions of The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Weird Science. Breakfast Club gets a multi-part docu with some of the original cast, plus a commentary by Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson. Candles gets a multipart docu. Science gets a multi-part docu but no commentary with Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith like I know we all want. You can pre-order them by clicking on their titles above.
