Chris Anderson’s Hideous iPhone Bill

Just saw from The Long Tail blog that Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired, got smacked with a $2100 bill from his iPhone checking messages automagically while he was in China. This apparently seems to be going around, showing here:

On one hand, it’s probably a good idea to familiarize yourself with the cost plans of your devices ahead of time. On another hand, Consumerist points out that apparently Crackberry users get a better deal on international data plans than iPhone users (probably because iPhone users are used to overpaying for things–cough cough). And on a third hand (that you presumably borrowed from someone else, just make sure you give it back–and wash it before you do), when the editor-in-chief of Wired gets blindsided by a bill having to do with technology, this does not bode well.

It’s a good thing I didn’t have an iPhone on me when I found myself mysteriously in Croatia in the last post, that’s for damn sure. Whew.
