Well, Chazzie award-winner Johnny Cash was (and is) a musical legend. He’s like the country version of Joe Cocker in that he can cover just about any damn song he pleases and it works. And right before I was spawned, he hosted a television show where all manner of musicians came through and not only performed, but some of them performed with Cash. One example we’ve already posted is Cash playing with Louis Armstrong, which was badass.
There are sixty-six live performances here across two discs, and the roster of who’s on is impressive as hell: Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Stevie Wonder, CCR, Joni Mitchell, Derek and the Dominos, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams Jr and loads more. And of course Cash is performing his songs, like “Ring of Fire,” “Ride This Train” and “Man in Black.” Some of this stuff hasn’t been seen since the show originally aired. You got four hours of musical performances plus new interviews with John Carter Cash, Hank Williams Jr. and others.
Anyway, if you’d like a taste, Doc sent me this bit where Ray Charles steps up and covers the living hell out of “Ring of Fire.” Awesome.
